The New Institute – Redefining the Possible

Redefining the Possible explores critical economic concepts that shape our society and investigates how reimagining these concepts can address the ecological crisis. Through a series of eight in-depth interviews with leading economists, complemented by four scholarly essays, the project challenges and expands current economic dialogues to foster actionable, sustainable solutions. Aimed to leverage human capacities for imagination, reflection, and anticipation in critically examining entrenched economic ideologies, tt posited that reevaluating these thought patterns could catalyze a shift towards more sustainable economic practices and policies.

The collaboration involved The New Institute and Zeit Online, with key journalistic contributions from Petra Pinzler of Zeit, whose insightful interviewing further enriched the discourse. The content was simultaneously published on The New Institute’s “Redefining the Possible” and on Zeit Online, reaching a broad audience of educated readers, policy makers, and economic thinkers.

In crafting Redefining the Possible, the approach was not merely to inform but to engage and provoke thought among its viewers. The web special was distinguished by its integration of dynamic, experimental typography and abstract animations that visually articulated the complexity of economic discourse. This design choice mirrored the entangled and dynamic nature of the topics discussed, making the heavy content more accessible and engaging. Each essay and interview was meticulously designed to allow users to navigate the content interactively, with opportunities for deeper exploration through embedded links and further readings, thus enriching the user experience and educational depth.

The project reflects a deep commitment to using language and design as tools for political and economic change. By reframing economic discussions, the project advances the notion that sustainable growth and innovation are not only necessary but possible with a shift in perspective. This aligns with a broader professional philosophy that values social innovation and the power of narrative to drive collective action towards desirable futures. The design and content are structured to foster an understanding that economic terms and their implications are foundational to crafting policies that can lead to sustainable societal structures. The design and development of the web special was executed using Webflow, which facilitated a highly tailored and flexible design approach. This platform allowed for precise control over every design element, ensuring that the content’s presentation was as impactful as its message. Custom animations and interactive typographic elements were developed to capture the viewer's attention and emphasize the interconnectedness of economic terms and social realities.
